It’s not the first time we’ve said it, but it bears repeating; it ain’t easy finding good cafes in the west. There is, however, one place that we constantly get referred to by locals over and over again; Cornershop in Yarraville.

What we like about Cornershop is that it wouldn’t matter where in Melbourne it was situated, it would still make the grade. All the better that it happens to be somewhere that is a little light on for quality offerings.

Top of the list of things we love about Cornershop is the wine list. Yep, we’re bypassing the food and going straight to the booze, because it is nothing short of excellent. Had I not been driving I would most certainly have ordered myself a glass of Dr Loosen Dry Riesling. Or maybe I would have opted for the Grosset Watervale Riesling. Damn these difficult decisions to hell.

The menu, designed for sharing, is packed with things that you’d walk over your mother to have a crack at.

The food is also glorious. The menu, designed for sharing, is packed with things that you’d walk over your mother to have a crack at. Things like fried barramundi fish balls served with a watercress tabbouleh and horseradish cream. Don’t mind if I do. Or the coconut duck salad with green papaya, snake beans and ground rice. If it’s raining outside, close your eyes and imagine it’s monsoon season somewhere in Asia.

It pains me to say that the coffee is a little up and down. It’s the only thing stopping this place from being absolutely brilliant. It’s not like they don’t try. They serve an excellent blend from Coffee Supreme and even offer single origins as a pour overs, so their intentions are good. It’s just that the consistency isn’t there. I’ve had good cups and average cups. This might be more of an issue if everything else wasn’t so super. I still think the best coffee in the west can be had at Duchess Of Spotswood.

All said and done, Cornershop is definitely worth your custom. If I lived in Yarraville this would be my local. And I’d be pretty damn happy about that.
