Opening Hours:

Sitting out the front of The Millswyn on a Saturday morning, with the sun shining, birds chirping and babes brunching all around me, it felt like I was on holiday somewhere far away and beautiful.

The waiters were floating to and fro looking snappy in black and everything had an air of boutique hotel about it. Looking out across the greenery of The Tan from behind a little white picket fence, The Girl From Ipanema was playing in the background and I almost convinced myself I was back on the holiday of my lifetime in Brazil. The similarities between the particular café I was recalling in Rio, and how everything looked and sounded at The Millswyn, were so vivid and real that I thoroughly tripped myself out imagining the last two years of my life had been a dream and in actual fact, I had dozed off while lunching at A Garota de Ipanema on a leafy green street in Rio back in 2009.

It was really only the lunching ladies behind me and talk of their offspring’s education at a Melbourne private school that confirmed it was 2011 and just another run-of-the-Millswyn Saturday morning in South Yarra.

My breakfast of smoked trout, avocado and poached eggs (which comes sans toast) was plentiful, pretty and beautiful tasting ($17.50). And the coffee – made through a La Marzocco machine with beans from Single Origin Roasters in Sydney – hit the spot too.

While the food might be a little on the exey side, it’s hard to put a price on the happy vibes a café can sometimes fill you with. When The Millswyn smiled at me, I went to Rio de Janeiro and it was worth every penny.
