For me, it’s the obsessive attention to detail that makes Patricia Coffee Brewers. Everywhere you turn in the tiny space you can see evidence of proprietor Bowen Holden’s obsession.
Personality it does have, though not in an out-of-place kind of way. It still has the polish that you would expect of the neighbourhood; rest assured you won’t be sitting on a milk crate. No sir, designer stools all the way for your gentrified butt.
One of the things we wanted to achieve with Espresso Melbourne was to find and champion great suburban cafes. If you live in the inner city, you’re likely spoilt for choice and paying for that luxury in the form of exorbitant rent. One of the things that will improve the livability of our ever outward expansion towards the suburbs is better amenities like cafes. So when we come across a little ripper like Omar And The Marvellous Coffee Bird, you know it’s going to the internetz pool room.
Brother Baba Budan’s multitudinous fans know one thing for sure; the coffee here is Jackson Pollock’s bollocks. Weekdays are often full of 9-to-5ers enjoying some of the Brother’s amazing coffee goodness under a perplexing canopy of hanging wooden chairs.
With the sort of fervor usually reserved for the second coming of Christ or the release of the latest Apple iThingy, Twitter let me know that Melbourne’s newest cafe, De Clieu, had opened and it was the dog’s bollocks.
Typically the places we feature fall into three broad categories: coffee temple; gastro cafe or cracking all rounder. Which makes Dukes a tough pigeon to hole. By rights it should be a specialist coffee cafe. They are called Dukes Coffee Roasters after all and there’s no doubting that the coffee is excellent.
We love the design of this tiny cafe in New York. They have taken the idea of a library and turned it on its head- literally.
Batch is my local. During the six or so years that it’s been open, I’ve visited more days than not, thanks to the fact that it’s a short stroll from my home but more importantly beacuse the coffee is quite frankly awesome.
I’m reasonably sure that every business strives for excellence, but why is it only some get there? I see plenty who are trying to achieve that elusive state, they do all the right things but still they never make it beyond good.
If I tried to convince you that there was a shortage of decent cafes in South Melbourne you’d be like, no way, what about St Ali and Dead Man? Agree, the city end of South Melbourne has a couple of crackers. The lake end, however is without exception, a wasteland.
