‘Do you know a good café in Camber-’ ‘Cattivo’.

Whenever people ask me for a coffee recommendation in Camberwell, I am always locked and loaded and ready to shoot ‘Cattivo!’ before they’ve got to the – well. Its pared back Euro stylishness and Genovese coffee make it a no-brainer.

I stumbled on this place a couple of years ago and it has never failed to impress since that first spinach omelette. I’ve gone back for a takeaway long black and a mini panettone. I’ve had a simple lunchtime pasta with peas and herbs and a San Pellegrino. It’s like couture cuisine – simple flavours and quality accessories sent out with effortless style.

And then there’s the coffee. Cattivo use Genovese’s Super Brazil to brew up a long black that is thick and velvety like mink and goes oh so well with a little pastry.

Cattivo has bodyswerved the tired-ass shabby chic of so many places in favour of minimalism that is spunky without being austere. You can feel the low-key glamour rub off on you. Makes you feel so…photogenic.

I love love loooove this cafe!! Marty (head chef) and his crew are so nice. Most amazing flavours. Each meal is simple yet perfect mix of ingredients. Menu is always changing, each day a different meal – each based on traditional Italian cuisine.

Fantastic place and really, really great service – always so normal and nice, so organised. Our work eat there once or twice each week.

My absolute favourite cafe in Melb.  – not just great, but consistently great – since the day they opened! And I should know, I’ve been there every day since then!

Try the Schiacciata (not sure that’s the correct spelling), or the Bacon + Egg rolls, or the Piadina’s, it doesn’t matter, it’s always the best you’ve ever tasted. The staff are wonderful, and Marty is a star!
