If I could ever get emotional about a cafe it would be The Spot. My first weeks in Australia were spent about two blocks away at my now in-laws house. And if relocating to the other side of the world wasn’t complicated enough, we moved in with my fiancés parents, which made things interesting. Her folks are great, and I’m not just saying that because they read my work which they do, I’m also saying it because it’s true. (Wink!)
However every now and then when I would need a quiet moment, The Spot was there for me. I could slip out the backdoor and have a coffee and steaming plate of dukkah eggs while sitting under a tree with a newspaper before my fiance even noticed I was gone.
Now I don’t know what kind of magic substance that dukkah comes from or why I wake up craving it, I just know that I’m not a nice person until i get it. We all have needs and sometimes mine is dukkah.
The coffee sourced from Genovese is smooth and flavorful. Plus when you order your coffee strong it shows up ready to help you a move a couch, when the lift is broken, and you live on the 5th floor.
The staff is fun and you can tell they are having a good time. Its a got a great local feel and when you show up on your second visit and beyond they treat you like they have seen you before, which in a city full of cafes is rarer then it should be.
The menu is varied and has something for everyone even the kids. The bircher muesli tastes fresh sweet and crunchy and it’s as close as your going to get to dessert for breakfast without your mum getting mad. The gnocchi is fluffy and made with care and you can tell. And then there is the dukkah, if you don’t like it there is probably something wrong with you. No judgement just saying.
Drop by the window for a coffee to go, but really treat yourself right have a seat and get the dukkah.
