Respect The Fresh

I am unlucky enough to work at what is commonly referred to around the office as the “Beirut end” of Collins Street. Much has been written by bloggers about the lack of quality cafes in the area. So you can imagine my joy when I discovered the gorgeous Kinfolk about a year ago. Since then, Kinfolk has become my “go-to” café when I’m looking for a lunch that’s just a little out of the ordinary.

Kinfolk describes itself as a “social business”. It redistributes its profits between four development projects. The café is staffed mainly by enthusiastic volunteers and, as you pay, you’re encouraged to choose which development project you’d like your money to go towards. The last time I visited I chose a literacy project for indigenous youth.

But you needn’t consider Kinfolk as a charity case. It’s an excellent café in its own right and I’m sure that once you visit, you’ll return again and again. The interior is cluttered with all sorts of adorable odds and ends and most customers are seated at a large communal table. There’s a fantastic vibe in the room which allows you to totally forget about the office for an hour or so.

The menu at Kinfolk is small but impressive. It generally consists of a soup, two open sandwiches and a couple of salads or more substantial meals. The menu is different each day, and is always interesting. On the day I visited I enjoyed an open sandwich of jamon, quince paste, frizzee, aged machego cheese and avocado oil which was delicious. The soup was sweet potato, brown lentil and coconut with spiced croutons.

The coffee, made from beans donated by Di Bella, is consistently excellent. And it comes served on old school saucers that look like they came straight from your Grandma’s house- very cute.
Kinfolk is a great café for office workers in the area. I only wish it was open on weekends as well…
