Have you ever wanted to disappear? Just bodyswerve everyone and everything you know and slip away to a little oasis where no one will find you? Somewhere where you can lounge around under the lazy sway of a tree, drinking champagne and cherrypicking your way through a lush platter of haloumi and olives. Somewhere where you can snuggle up by an open fire with a book and some chunky chips. Somewhere inconspicuous. Unassuming. Perfect for your needs.

Then I’ll meet you at Famous Blue Raincoat.

Squished into a short clutch of shops in the cramped, low-lying suburban swathe of Spotswood, this adorable café is like a mirage of unexpected charm with its lazy days backyard, cosy dining room and hearty smattering of kitsch. The food is quality lunchy reliables – pizzas, toasted sandwiches and cracking anti pasto platters – and the Jasper’s coffee is solid. FBR is perfect for a breezy breakfast, a casual lunch (with bargainous lunch specials), or a let-the-music-play, loud and loungey, wine-soaked evening.

The term ‘hidden gem’ can be a raging cliché but FBR really is the dictionary definition of it.

After arriving in Spotswood too late for Duchess, my friend and I headed to FBR, given that I’d read about it on espresso melbourne. WE ordered coffee and cakes. Coffee was unimpressive, the cakes were ok, but we were gobsmacked to be told that they were $12 and $13 each when we headed up to pay. Overpriced, average food and disappointing, unfriendly service on what was an otherwise quiet afternoon . We won’t be back.
