It's Only Rock 'n' Roll

‘Don’t ask us to turn the music down – we like it this way.’ The hand-scrawled sign is long gone but the message still plays loud and clear at Yellow Bird, where it’s more tatts than tans and the music is always just what you’re in the mood for – unless you’re in the mood for pallid café muzak, in which case you better keep walking.

Yellow Bird’s fit-out has morphed a bit over the years, from ramshackle share house to a wild blend of vintage laminex and Tex-Mexy art, but two things that haven’t strayed an inch from the day it started is the food and the music. Both are always rockin’. Both are good for you. Both go perfectly with beer. Think Blues Explosion and a chilli burger, or Pavement and a breakfast burrito. The menu goes Tex Mex once a week with Tijuana Tuesdays, and the coffee, a really consistent, punchy Genovese brew, goes perfect with a house-made donut.

I always take out-of-towners to Yellow Bird, just to show them how Melbourne really rolls.
